Help ... HIV or PEP Rash?
      #158470 - 08/10/05 10:35 PM

About 4 weeks ago I stopped a PEP regimen consisting of Nelfinavir, 3TC and 4DT after 11 days.

I stopped due to a bad rash that developed all over my body (it was hot, red and kinda scaly on my legs, arms, neck, back and some on my chest).

I started PEP 12 hours after a brief insertive anal encounter with another man of unknown status. Encounter happened at a bathhouse so I should assume he was poz. It was 20-30 seconds of insertive anal -- with no ejaculation and no sores on penis. There was no oral sex involved. My doc ran a baseline HIV test and a syphillis test 12 hours after the encounter and both returned negative. Once the meds stopped -- the rash subsided.

I went for my 6 week HIV test just yesterday and I'm waiting on results.

My questions:

1) Would my PEP regimen cause a rash as I described above? ... or ... could the rash be a symptom of HIV infection (after 11 days).

2) Today (7 weeks from encounter) my right armpit was bothering me. If I push in the centre of my pit, there is an ache (kinda like the ache you feel when you touch a pimple). Is this another sign of HIV? I don't know where my lymph nodes are so I don't know what to think! I don't want to over-react and bother my doc again. Am I over-reacting?

3) I think I may have over-reacted and my doc gave me the option of starting PEP indicating that a hospital ER might have not considered PEP considering the circumstances of the encounter. I'm now concerned about over-reacting in the future and don't want to be rushing out to my doc for PEP after every "accident".

Was PEP warranted in my situation? ... and ... under what circumstances should PEP be taken?

Someone please help.

I'd like to answer the most important quiestion first. your rash could have easily been from the meds you were taking. It is very common, and I've seen alot of people need to stop them for a ton of reasons. and they still tested negaive (my husband being one of them actually).

But you physician was right by telling you that the ER would not constitute this situation where PEP should be mandated. (of course in your head, and in your fear.....if theres somthing to try and prevent it, why shouldn't you be allowed to get it). but from your description of the situation even to us, it was an unprotected encounter, consensuil, yes fearful, because of the unknown, but none the less, unprotected....and consentual. This is what you are showing the doctor every time you have an "accident". If you keep playing with fire....you know the rest.
you can't take a partner of unknown status willingly with no concom and expect that these drugs will PREVENT you from getting hiv. because it just wont. it 'HELPS to TRY and not keep you from converting, but its not something that is definitly going to kill any hiv that gets near your bloodstream.
If you keep putting yourself in harms way, and take these meds all the time, they too, will not work at all...even if you do catch hiv. you may use up possibilities in the future for yourself if you continue to feel that you should take them when you have allowed yourself to be put at risk. What you should take with you even before then is a condom, a couple if you have to, if the first one breaks. then...you dont have to go and ask your doctor for PEP.

good luck
love and prayers to you
debbie

Hey Deb,

Thanks for the response. Actually, it wasn't a "consentual act". I went to an establishment here (a sex bar -- kinda like a bathhouse -- but not quite). Anyway, people go there for sex, etc. I was receiving oral from someone behind a glory hole. He stopped for a few seconds and returned -- this time it felt different. I thought it was his mouth, it was warm and kinda tight -- but I thought he was doing something with his tongue and mouth. Anyway, I looked down 20-30 seconds later and noticed his ass poking through the glory hole! I freaked out and ran outta there. I washed my dick with soap and left the establishment.

I ALWAYS practise safe sex -- ALWAYS! The funny thing is that I'm always a BOTTOM! So, this encounter was very outta the norm. The doctor even described it as some sort of sexual assault -- it definitely wasn't consentual! But, nonetheless, it happened.

I've got about anoth 5-7 days before I get my 6 week HIV results back. What do you guys think? Does it look good or bad for me?

By the way, the armpit ache has sorta disappeared today (not as prevalent). Hopefully, it's nothing and just me over-reacting ... again.

I wouldn't really consider giong to a bathhouse for sex (even oral) without protection an assault.

Dude,

Please read the e-mail. I went there for oral and ended up with some guy sticking his ass on my dick -- without protection -- and without my consent! To me that sounds like assault.

I know there are risks when going to places like that, but that guy didn't even ask if I wanted to fuck him (let alone give me the option of using a condom). He took advantage of the fact that he was behind a glory hole and assumed that I would be O.K. with fucking him -- which I wasn't! I'm not even a top!

you went there to have anonymous (even if it was oral) sex with a "hole". (glory hole). if you want to ask a person what assault is---you should ask someone who has been forced to have sex and certainly didn't come to get off.
you cant go running to your doctor for post expousre medication when YOU wnat to have sex with strangers. what do you expect to happen when you put your dick in a hole.

Point made. I guess there are varying levels of assault.

Obviously, mine was of a lesser degree considering the circumstances. I've learned my lesson and won't be sticking my dick in any "holes" in the future.
