Stopping treatment?
      #158202 - 08/05/05 11:19 AM

Hi, it's me again. I have a question.. I've been on PEP for exactly 5 days and 4 hours. I accidentally punctured myself with a needle after trying to take a blood sample from a 4-year old boy (who seems to be fine but there's always some risk I guess); I had my gloves on and I couldn't take the sample anyway cuz he was hysterical, when I took the needle out of him there wasn't even any blood but still the needle must've come into contact with something while inside of his body. So they did HIV and Hepatitis tests on him but I'm still waiting for the results, I know my boss is doing everything she can to get them, I know you have to wait only 2 or 3 days to get the results so I don't understand what's happening, this is hell, it's been 5 days. Today I called her (I can't manage to go to work, I'm vomiting all the time) and she told me that MAYBE they could be ready for next week, which is a LOT of time, considering the side effects of those medications. College starts on Monday and I can't afford to not go, but I can't do anything while taking these pills, should I just stop treatment?? I don't know what to do, and I have to go to work eventually. Could it be that his results are positive and that's why it's taking so long? Thanks..

positive results would not take longer. Even if they wanted to run them again...the results would come back, and the physician would tell you that. I know in our clinic it can take tive to SIX days atleast. I'm sure the mother knows that he was tested for hiv. What does she say? Does she say he is healthy? I will tell you, if a mother knew her child may be sick or infected and someone else may be put in harms way...I would think they would be honest about it. (i know being a mother I would)

But, I've also told you about my husband needing to stop the meds because of the side effects. Really...it was killing him all day. (I know those feelings too). Have you talked to your/doc or the specialist about this? It could really be hurting your liver as well. See what they say about your side effects. They may advise that its good that you stop.
I'm sure the boy was negative (but I understand your concerns as well) you should act as though anyone may have it. I think you should try calling the clinic. (there will probably be a doctor on call if after hours) let them know how awful you feel, and if you should just stick it out a couple days, or if it may be that harmful to stop.

good luck
debbie

Deb is right;
PEP will not delay HIV conversion and testing window. Also if at t reputable doctor’s office or hospital the doctor or head nurse will look in the families file before administering PEP and see if it is necessary. HIV is not so prevalent that if a mother was infected they would not take the precautions not to infect there infant. There are HIV infected mothers, but they take all the precautions to make sure that there child stays negative during birth and early development.
