PEP question
      #158175 - 08/05/05 02:49 AM

Hi, I've been on PEP for almost 5 days due to an occupational exposure, I'm taking Crixivan, Retrovir and Epivir; I took my last doses last night, around 10 pm, and then I didn't take anything today during the day because I had to do a few things at the university (registration etc) so I needed to be "healthy" for a while.. thing is I missed 2 doses of Crixivan and 1 dose of Retrovir/Epivir, what should I do? I took the normal dose about an hour ago, I don't know if I should take the other 2 doses of Crixivan and the other dose of Retrovir/Epivir in about at least 3 hours? And then continue as always? I've read that the virus could start to grow if I miss one dose and it scares me, but I also worry about being poisoned or having an overdose by taking 2 doses at a time. Thanks!!

You should NEVER double up on these medications. PEP is just an extra step to ensure, but missing ONE dose is NOT going to cause the virus to replicate (if AT ALL it is there). My husband and I had a condom break (when I was not on meds) and he had to take PEP as well. but his liver was horrible and he was SO unable to tolerate after 10 days. I had to call the doctor becuase I knew the damage he was doing to his body, but he has never tested positive.

Even when I was taking medicaitons regularly, when i would go out with the girls on friday nights....I would skip the night dose (when drinking) AND next day (hungover) I know...SO WRONG, and I dont want anyone to assume reading this that I ever thought it was okay. I was DISGUSTINGLY sick from this first set of medications, so I can understand what you mean about having a "healthy day".

Dont beat yourself up about a couple of pills. These medications are so hig and heavy in doses, that you will be covered okay until the morning really. what is the bad part about missing any medicaitons, are when people go on for a few days, take a few days off. (or even weeks, or months on and off). it causes resistance. But YOU on the other hand, will be fine. Please take it easy. You should ask the specialist office that you seen for the occupational risk.

Good luck and really, dont worry about it

love and prayers,
