This may sound really dense, but I have to ask. I understand why IV drug users "may" be more prone to HIV infection because of the direct route into the bloodstream. But why did HIV hit the gay men community as heavily as it did in the 80's? Is it because of anal sex and if so, why is anal sex so risky?
thanks

It isnt a stupid question. Anal sex is risky because we have very fragile mucous membranes in our anus. There is a tendency to rupture or traumatize those membranes during this particular sex act, thus leading to a more efficient route for possible HIV transmission.
