Meaning of Acute
      #14167 - 12/22/00 02:20 PM

I thought the meaning of the word acute meant temporary and not long lasting, as opposed to chronic, which means persisting. I hear a lot of people think they have "acute" retroviral syndrome when their symptoms last for weeks or months. They'll respond that their bodies are slow at producing antibodies and that is why they feel sick all the time since they are slowly producing antibodies (and also why their test results are repeatedly negative). If an illness is acute, can they still show different symptoms at different times throughout that short sickness. I know I get a seasonal cold and show different symptoms at different times with that acute illness? I.e, I may get a sore throat at first, then that goes away, followed by sneezing, congestion, runny nose, fever, and muscle aches, with all that going away and ending with a wet cough for several days.

The word 'acute' means rapid and sudden onset. If a person is experiencing symptoms over a long period of time or symptoms that come and go or don't come all at once it isn't 'acute' and more than likely is not Acute Retroviral Syndrome. That's why they have repeated negative results, because they don't have it, not because there bodies are slow at producing antibodies.

Also a cold is not really considered acute. An old wives tale says that a cold is three days coming, three days staying and three days going. That's one of the ways you can tell the difference between a cold and the flu.

Lending more to Jackie's excellent response, ARS is a "constellation" of symptoms coming on all at once. It doesnt come on installment basis. Just like any virus, if you are sick -- your body will let you know just that. Not sniffles, not just a sore throat -- sick as in you want to go to your doctor sick.

Good luck! == PVS
