testing facts
      #14090 - 12/21/00 03:03 PM

Question:

Dear Sir. How are we ever going to eradicate this disease when we cant even come up with an adequate test to diagnose it. You know well if any of these people who are convinced they are infected and are, continue to test neg, eventually someone else is going to be involved. so how are we going to cure what we cant even find. At first I had read that the chances of testing neg well after the window period was as likely as hitting the lotto now I find out its more in the line of peelin off free fries at Mcdonalds monopoly game. there needs to be truth told and for the most part you do an excellent job but in some cases you dance around the truth like a lawyer, maybe thats because of the fear factor but for those that may have been exposed and are not testing pos they need to know the facts straight up so this [censored] can be stopped in its tracks. Im sure some of these people have other significant ones in their lives. Please don't take me wrong doctor you should be praised and commended for the time that you put to this cause, others on this site wont even answer am i infected question, and I could understand that if false negatives at 6 months were 100%. i mean 1 in a thousand chance is like seeing a motorcyclye on a summer day amongst 999 other vehicles. Dont mean to ramble on doctor but you need to see our point.

Dr. Holodniy's Response:

I take your point. But we all need to remember that this forum is inteded for viral load and resistance testing and not diagnostic questions. Second, there is just not enough data to answer the questions you all are asking about testing accuracy...

The problem with this post is that the person, like many people, are looking for 100% certainty in their testing. IT just wont happen. The fact is that if you test negative at 6 months, you are damn close to 100%. No, its not a guarantee - nothing is!

It's not as close to 100% at 6 months as most people think............

How can people move on from a possible exposure and infection with anything less than 100% certainty. I want to know with 100% accuracy that I'm not infected, not most likely...............This HIV.

Where do you get your data? Why would the CDC tell people to stop testing at 6 months if it was not accurate? I understand that you want 100% certainty, but tell me, what medical test gives you that? If you are so concerned, why dont you get a DNA test? I mean, are you going to test for the rest of your life, still convincing yourself you are infected? Do you realize the implications of what you are proposing?

Want to be 100%? Test at 10 or 15 years after possible exposure. Want to be 99.99% sure? Test at 12 weeks and the get a grip.

What would the rest of the world and the USA (except from the CDC) would tell people 12 weeks is conclusive when it is not? Get a grip!.

12 weeks is because most of the places testing, are basing the fact people are (in most cases) not going to have just one risky encounter per year. If people test as they request, certainly the people at HIGH RISK for infection, would most likely be testing 4 times a year. Now having people test 4 times a year, HIGH RISK groups, is a much better policy than say every 6 months, or every year. Odds are, these extra test, will limit the number of people the they may expose. Testing guideline for non-traditional groups has been suggested every year, not every 3 months or 6 months. I'm not suggesting testing 10 to 15 years, but what I'm saying is to continue to test if you have reason to believe you were exposed, symptoms. The 6 month test is 99.99% accurate because almost if not 99% of the people test were never exposed. The CDC is a GOVERNMENT AGENCY. There testing recommendations are typical government BS.

What the hell are you talking about???? That is the worst thing I've ever heard. They are not telling people to test at 12 weeks and they're done because they think they will have another risk and test again anyway. Please man stop posting these ridiculous things. They tell you to test at 12 weeks and you're done because they know.

As Jackie said, there are NO guarantees in life! Please remember that anything is possible but if we all live our lives in the "what ifs", we will not be living at all. There is risk and a percentage of chance in everything, it is up to the individual to set a limit as to what is acceptable for them. There is a chance that you may go skydiving and go splat. Some people are willing to take that chance and others don't. There is a chance that you will be in an automobile accident. Some people accept that and drive. Some don't and walk. THE CHOICE IS YOURS TO MAKE!!

What it boils down to is do your own thorough research from different credible, informed resources and then come to a decision as to what is comfortable for YOU. Once you have decided on a testing strategy that you will be able to accept and move on, DO IT!

Tex

I spend a lot of time painstaking searching the net for the truth on HIV infection. I believe my info was solid. . .because I stole it from the best sites such as John Hopkins' Gallant and CDC amonth others.
Again, test at six months, and put a fork in it, cuz you done!

OUTDATED INFO new
      #14204 - 12/23/00 01:28 PM

You took the information from a government agency when all the world except from that agency says 3 months now is conclusive. Even people at the cdc says 3 months is enough but because the cdc is a governmente office it takes longer to update it. Do your homework Dude.
