Hey everyone,
Need some help from people with knowledge of HIV, neg or poz or people who were on PEP.
I made a one time mistake of having unprotected (I inserted my penis vaginally) sex, one time, with a sex worker, status unknown...just 11 days ago. I was intoxicated and immediately went to the ER and was given a shot and prescription for PEP. I swallowed my first set of pills ( think its Retriever and 3 TCH, don't have the bottles in front of me) just 14 hours after exposure, even though PEP has not been proven to work for sexual exposure. I had.
I have come down with symptoms of ARS within the past 11 days of exposure. On day 2 or 3 I was already vomiting, felt like I had a fever (but temperature was normal), had night sweats both hot and cold...as well as insomnia. I'm sleeping all of the time and most recently my throat has become sore. I would like to know how much of these symptoms can be side effects from the PEP meds I'm taking? Also I have read numerous stories on this forum about symptoms and negative tests...but don't you think it's a little coincidental that people come down with these symptoms right after exposure? It is definitely not all in my head, even though I'm sure anxiety and freaking out is making me not feel well along with meds.
Also the statistic that there is a .1 % chance of catching HIV from an HIV + person through vaginal insertive...where do these percentages come from? Are they relaible? If so are they saying my chance of contracting HIV from a person who is infected is .1 % or are they saying out of all of the men having unprotected sex .1 % will catch it?
Also do I test 3 months from exposure or 3 months after I'm done with PEP???
Thank you for your help!

your on PEP for a one time screw with a hooker?? Are you nuts!! Your risk is so small its not even worth the typing. You have more of a chance of getting other STD's than HIV. Do you understand how powerfull those drugs are? Good luck, I freeked out once myself and was put on PEP. thank God a real HIV doc. got in touch with me after two days on it and took me off them after hearing my exposure.

Yes, Im aware that PEP is toxic and I feel that I would regret God forbid that I was infected I would have said, "maybe I could have prevented it if I tried PEP". Even though I could have prevented from safe sex I messed up and am extremely concerned as I'm only 26, engaged and my first child will be born in a matter of says.
I just want to be around for them.
Thanks for the vote of confidence as I learned my lesson.

As I posted earlier you don't need PEP. What you do need is to test for other STD'S . I will also give you this advise: if you are married and are going to let your little head do the thinking you should come clean with the wife and if she sticks around you should use condoms all the time to protect her. To many guys are screwing around and passing it on to the wife. You are 26 and horny so use condoms its as simple as that.

Much of what you are going through may be because of the side effects of the medications....welcome to my world. Type in the name of each medication in a search engine and you will be able to find out what side effects can be caused by each....the list is long.

Your risk is SOOO absolutely low. I really wouldn't even worry about it. We see pts all the time to come in for PEP, and almost all of the time, people will experience those side effects. It is definitly from the meds and from your nerves. ! but they are right about being tested for STD's, those are much easier to catch. continue on the meds if it makes you feel better...its only a few tortorous weeks, hang in there. but you should be sure to be tested for atleast 6 months after the exposure...3 months is okay, but sometimes seroconverting could take place, right around that time, so 6 months is most accurate.

The only reason for testing past 3 months...would be PEP and then testing is recommended at 4 months. One month PEP and then the normal 3 months.
On average people develop antibodies by 25 days and as per Mass. Dept. of Health 99 percent will test postive by 6 weeks. The CDC even only recommends 6 months IF the other person is KNOWN HIV and a DOCTOR thinks it's warrented. It's been unheard of people test postive past 3 months since the inception of newer testing.
6 months is OLD OLD news and has been found to only increase people's anxiety waiting when it is total unnecessary.

I know it may be a total waste of time. But I work in a hospital with Infectious Disease specialist, where people come in for PEP all the time. yes, the risk is very minimal and they do tell them that past 3 months should be (and should be taken as) an accurate results, but they do have the patients follow up w/ in 6 months for a final (and most accurate) result.

TY debtex and everyone at thebody as I have pyshically felt a lot better since posting and all of my symptoms have went away. I never knew the risk was low for insertion for men to women, but I will never chance again.
Thanks!
