I have had unprotected sex with several people in my life, vaginal, anal, & oral, and only one person (my husband) in the past three years. Twice I have been tested, but was too afraid to get the results two weeks later. Secretly, I have been sure I was infected all these years. (Reading on this forum about the inconclusiveness of symptoms really helps my state of mind--thank you!!)
I feel my risk was pretty significant with one of these partners, as I found later that he had many others. He was also the only anal partner.
So, I feel it's time to finally face testing, but would feel much more comfortable doing so in my own doctor's office. I've heard for years, though, that for insurance reasons, it's much better to go to an anonymous testing facility. Also, it's free. So my question is whether this is still true. And does anyone know about cost?
I intend to talk to my doctor about all this, but the subject still freaks me out a little, and this is much better to get used to talking about it. I have bad panic attacks, and want to make it as stress-free as possible.
Thank you for so many reasons.

Well, first quesiton is . . . where are you? If you are in the US, there are lots of good anon options for you. And the good news is that many of them will provide results as soon as the next day.
Many states have state sponsored anon clinics that are free. There is also the direct access test which you can either buy at your local pharmacy or order over the internet. These can provide results in as little as three days.
Some states also have for profit anon testing. Depending on what generation test you are looking for, it can range from $60 to $160. Given how long ago your exposure was, the generation of the test is not important. You give blood one day, and call an 800 number the next day for your results.
Finally, you should also be able to find a number of facilities that provide rapid tests. They will provide a result for you while you wait. Not sure the cost for these.
You should get your result . . . I highly doubt you are HIV positive.

I'm afraid I'm awfully uninformed, thanks for shedding some light. I am in the U.S., and am glad I have so many options, and fairly low-stress at that.
I've been so encouraged by the bravery of those members who are HIV positive. I hope I have not offended by my ignorance.
Thanks again.
