Getting up the nerve to get tested
      #137983 - 03/14/05 12:52 AM

I am a 21 year old female. I tested HIV negative about two years ago, following a bout of mono. I was so convinced I had it. I had lots of symptoms, but tested negative. Now I am in the same boat again. I have had a few unprotected sexual encounters that I am worried about since then, but the only symptoms I have had are headache, swollen glands in the neck, and body aches. I am a single parent and I am terrified. I need some encouragement to get tested.

Don't worry about symptoms, they can be from soooooo many different things. Just get tested. Try the same day result testing, that way you wont have to worry for 2 weeks. Call your local health department and inquire whether they have that type of testing. Either way it is in every persons best interest to get tested, especially if they are practicing unsafe methods of intimacy. Please do it for your child if nothing else, and try to use protection!!! Once again for your child. You are the only one that child has!!!!!

When was the last possible exposure? Was it over 13 weeks ago? I would wait if it wasnt 13 weeks ago although they say 50% of people show antifbodies at 4 weeks. If you need to know now and its been at least 28 days since last sex I would ask doctor for hiv dna pcr (its 99% accurate at 4 weeks although they say sometimes it could show false positive for very few cases) So I would wait for 13 weeks and be done with it ( I did it at 13 weeks and then at 6 months just to be 100% sure--I have hep c and sometimes it takes longer to show antibodies if you have other medical problems--ask a specialist) I will pray for you and please try to be careful--its more dangerous for you then me-I am hetro male and the female is more at risk then me--althought I am still at risk) Good luck--------------------------------Breathing
