I was reading that ARS can be distinguished from common respitory diseases since a runny nose, congestion, sneezing, and a productive cough are not symptoms of ARS. So, if someone had flulike symptoms such as a sore throat, low grade fever, and muscle pains but without any runny nose, congestion, sneezing, or wet cough, could this be ARS or could a flu not necessarily produce coughing, sneezing, congestion, and a runny nose?

First off flu like symptoms would not include a low grade fever, it would be high. Be that as it may, you really cannot diagnois HIV from symptoms, some people have ARS some don't. It affects people different ways. Also the symptoms of ARS are also symptoms from a myriad of other illnesses. Even a doctor would not try to diagnois from symptoms alone, no lay person ever should. If you are unsure of you status. The only thing to do is test.

ARS is a very tough thing to determine, the only test you could do is a PCR or a viral load test to tell if these symptoms were due to HIV infection.
