I think there are two immune systems. One that fights colds, flu's and stuff like that. The other fights OI's (opportunist Infections). So, that would explain why people with AIDS don't get colds and the flu. The immune systems are described below be a question opined by Gallant. and again, I'm no doctor or scientist, just out here late at night trying to edumucate (mispelled on purpose) the world.
Do CD4 cells play a role in fighting common ailments like a cold and respiratory infections?
They play a role, but not a big one. Colds and common respiratory infections are usually handled by the HUMORAL (antibody-mediated) immune system. CD4 cells have more to do with the CELLULAR immune system, which is important in fighting certain fungal infections (candidiasis, cryptococcosis, PCP), viral infections (herpes, CMV), mycobacterial infections (MAC, TB), and parasitic infections (toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis). The humoral immune system is affected by HIV, but to a much lesser degree than the cellular immune system.
