Would you always know if a condom failed?
      #134226 - 02/09/05 02:29 PM

Hi hopefully someone can please help me. If a condom is worn and doesn't have any visible tears or holes afterwards can you be sure HIV did not pass through? I've heard keeping a condom in your wallet can damage it, but does this mean that it is just more likely to tear, or that HIV / fluids could pass through the worn down latex? Thanks

Condoms are engineered to fail catastophically.

Therefore, if one fails, you would absolutely know it. They don't get tiny holes etc in them.

Thanks a lot for the speedy response. However, what got me worrying was some sites saying things like this:

"Do not carry condoms in your wallet for long periods of time. Replace them every once in a while. Friction from opening and closing your wallet, and from walking (if you carry your wallet in your pocket) can cause tiny holes to develop in the condom. Nevertheless, it is better to use a condom that has been in your wallet for a long time than to not use one at all." Here is the URL to that site: http://www.healthscout.com/ency/article/004001.htm

Can you tell me what you based your response on? I've read a couple reassuring things in Dr. Bobs column but none that really answered my question. I've sent a question to him but don't know if he will respond / when he'll respond.

Thanks a lot. Anyone else with info please respond!

The common methodology for testing condoms is the "air burst test", "the tensil strength test" and "water leak test.

Data collected on these tests have shown that when condoms fail, they do so catastrophically.

The FDA tests condoms for holes electronically.

Yes but wouldn't the tests only apply to brand new condoms? Not trying to argue, just want to be sure.
