Dear Friends:
I had a PCRDNA test and the result I got was "less than 400 copies / mL", I enquired and the lab said they had found no hiv but that the accuracy was limited to less than 400 copies, so if I had 50 they wouldn't be able to detect it. I had a high-risk encounter about 6-7 weeks ago, and I am wondering how definitive this result would be. Thanks,

A Ribose Nucleic Acid Polymerase Chain Reaction Assay is NOT a diagnostic tool. Your non reactive to less than 400 copies of virions per ml of blood means your assay did NOT detect any HIV virions given the sensitivity of the test.
I would feel very good about this result, yet you must test at 12 weeks using an ELISA / EIA for your all clear. BTW, what was your risk?

Risk was unprotected anal sex (top) with individual of unknown status. Thanks

Sound like you had a DNA/RNA test not an PCR. Anyway your test should give you comfort. Get an elisa test to back it up. 6/8 weeks is great you will be NEG again. Whewww

Insertive anal is far less risk than receptive.
Your PCR is nearly your all clear. Your 3 month ELISA will merely confirm your negative status.

I'm surprised that they just gave you a PCR without the Elisa - they're usually used in conjunction for diagnosis (actually, Elisa is usually used alone, but when PCR is done ... they always seem to use Elisa as well).
