Where do you find antigen testing
      #133412 - 01/23/05 09:02 PM

I have only heard of this testing here on the internet. Many people say they were tested using the fourth generation test. All of the clinics around here just use Oraquick or they will send your blood in if you want to wait a few weeks to get the results and nobody there can tell me what generation any of these things are. Any answers?

Hummm...
In my lab, we do the two conventional tests....ELISA and Western Blot confirmatory.
ELISA is only a screening test, and is prone to a lot of false positives. That's why we never report "POSITIVE" unless the WB pattern is consistant with HIV. Things like the flu virus can cause the ELISA to show reactivity.
There are several other tests out there, but rarely ever offered routinely. If the WB is positive, we are 99.999999% sure you are HIV positive. It's highly specific, and sensitive.
There are great websites to research other tests like direct antigen testing and viral markers. Try doing a search under "HIV testing" and see what you come up with.
Good luck and good health! :)
