Tattoo and body piercing
      #132393 - 12/29/04 06:12 AM

Hello my friends. I have a question. Can you get hiv from body piercing or tattoo? I had unprotected sex with someone who had tattoos on his hands. What is the % of infected people who got the disease from tattoos?

The risk of transmission due to body piercings or tattoos is still purely theoretical, as no transmission through that route has ever been recorded. Several cases of hepatitis B transmission as a result of tattooing have been recorded, however, and cases of hepatitis C have also been reported in Europe, although studies done in the U.S. have not confirmed the European findings. Other health problems have also been associated with tattoos and piercings.

Although HIV transmission is unlikely and there have been no confirmed cases, the CDC maintains that "a risk of HIV transmission does exist if instruments contaminated with blood are either not sterilized or disinfected or are used inappropriately between clients." Because of this, personal service workers engaged in tattooing or body piercing should receive proper education and training regarding HIV prevention and should strictly follow necessary precautions.
