Swollen glands
      #1234 - 04/01/00 01:34 AM

So I have noticed that everyone that thinks they are hiv+ have swollen glands or lymph nodes. Personally I have had swollen, sore glands since November and I am at high risk. Is everyone hiv+ or are we just really paranoid? Do all these people with swollen glands end up hiv+? I'm trying to stay calm till i get a + test but as all of you know thats the hardest thing to do. I guess I don't have any answers, just more question...

If people would stop whining, and go get tested, maybe they
woulden't ask the questions that they know the answer to, and
that we don't. Most of us out here that are HIV+, and know we are!
are not wining. We are living every day, day in, and day out, with
this disease and reading articles like ,I swallowed am I infected.
How do we know, we wern't there to hold your hand, and find out if
your'e trick was + or not. Some of the people out there must think
this is The Psychic AIDS Network. Well it isn't, im sorry to burst
your'e bubble. Ive ben + for 10 years now and have watched alot of
friends pass away. Some of the questions asked in this forum are
just ignorent, if you are a vergin, and you have never used IV drugs,
and you haven't had to have a blood transfusion with un tested blood,
and have never had blood to blood contact, then how can you be infected with HIV.(one of the senerios on this forum) LIKE I SAID
THIS IS NOT THE PSYCHIC AIDS NETWORK, thank you.

If you are at high risk then you should get tested. There really are no particular symptoms. There is no way to tell in advance of the test. If you are at high risk for HIV, than you are at equally high risk for other sexually transmitted diseases--like hepatitis or genital warts, etc. Whenever you have unprotected sex with someone you are taking a risk. Don't drive yourself crazy trying to guess. Just get tested and stop taking risks and then feeling scared and paranoid. It's a terrible cycle and there is only one way to stop it.

Good luck! Call the Centers for Disease Control and ask them if they know of an anonymous testing center near you--and tell them your risk factor--1-800-342-2437. They are open 24 hours a day, every day.

Let's start by sayin that swollen glands are not an ARS (Advanced Retroviral Syndrome) symptom. Swollen LYMPH NODES are. Lymph nodes and glands are NOT the same thing. It's like saying that a lymph node and your testicle are the same thing. Well, they are not. First, go to a doctor so he can tell you if you have a lymmphodenopathy or not, because most people will go nuts about their lymph nodes because they have never ever have touched 'em since their "risky encounter", well, they have always been there, and you cannot tell if they are swollen unless they hurt, and a only a doctor can tell you about it. Second, this is an AM I INFECTED?-CLOSE CALLS forum, so, in other words, IF YOU ARE NOT INTERESTED IN HELPING OTHERS WHO DON'T KNOW AS MUCH AS YOU DO AND ARE PARANOID ABOUT SUCH A SERIOUS THING AS HIV, GO ELSEWERE. This is not the Physchic Aids Network, but hell I'm sure I would like it to exist, and since it doesn't, I'll do my best to help the people that come here worrying 'bout their life.

Go take an ELISA and a p-24 Antigen test. Remember 3 and 6 months after the encounter. Some individuals may show up positive after just 25 days after the encounter, 50% of people will show up positive after 46 days according to some studies. The CDC recommends testing at 3 months. At 6 months the test is 99.9% accurate, as accurate as they come in medicine. Take care, and remember, you life for the fight when it's all that you've got.

If you have any other doubts, concerns, or just need someone to talk to, just e-mail me.

Love,
Lobo

Thanks Lobo for your kind, good-natured response.
It's nice to see that people can still be nice to each other even now...especially when dealing with something as serious as HIV.

Thanks again,
Mel
