Unusual Symptoms - please help
      #119156 - 12/03/04 11:10 PM

FIrst off, sorry this is so long, please, if anyone has any input at all I would really really appreciate it. I wanted to know if it sounds like HIV/AIDS could be behind these symptoms. Around late September I began experiencing tongue pain, and it appeared that some of my taste buds were inflamed (they were big and white, with the surrounding area a little red). The inflammation has gone down considerably (as has the pain), but small white bumps are still present on the top of my tongue, and the top seems to have a whitish color to it, at least more so than the sides or underneath (and it does not scrape off), and is more red at the tip. I've also noticed a few tonsil stones from time to time also. My tongue seems to get better (normal color with just a few small white bumps) to worse (a generally white color, more coating in the back and some discomfort - sort of a burning sensation) - it seems like it cycles. Besides this, I have sweat in my sleep a little bit (not enough to change my clothes or sheets, but enough to notice) about 4 or 5 times over these past couple months. No other symptoms of illness, such as fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, weight loss, etc. are present however. As a side note-a day or two before the tongue problems began, I experienced mouth trauma by accidentally gouging my gum with my fingernail pretty badly. The wound was infected and turned into a cancer sore, all around the same time as the inflammation of my tongue. I saw a doctor and explained my symptoms to him and he only told me that it wasn't very impressive and that I should rinse my mouth with salt water, but that was before I began to entertain the idea of HIV, so I hadn't even thought to ask him. That was nearly three weeks ago, and yet these small pin size bumps are still here. I feel fine other than my tongue, and I'm not in a high-risk group for the virus, but I'm still at a loss as to why my tongue hasn't seemed to return to normal after over 2 months. Please let me know if you've ever heard of anything that resembles my symptoms or if you could help at all. I'm scared and confused about what is going on, and I have no insurance right now (just graduated college) so any advice would really help. Thanks so much.

No one, whom has any merit, will begin to diagnose you with HIV based upon your reported symptoms. You see, the symptoms of primary HIV infection are flu like and generic to so many other illnesses that they are hardly a reliable indicator or predictor of your HIV status.

Furthermore, you have not shared any risk with us.

Thanks for the response. I've read and understand the typical progression of HIV and it's related symptoms, and I don't believe that I have displayed any symptoms of primary HIV (or that I have been exposed to the virus any time recently). Rather, my question pertains to the later stages of the virus. In regard to my risk - a tattoo 4 years ago, unprotected vaginal sex with a female of unkown status 1and a half years ago...I'm not expecting a diagnosis, I know that I need to take the test to know my status, but I'm just at a loss to know anything about the oral symptom that I'd described...I can't seem to find any matching description anywhere. Sorry of my original post wasn't clear, and thanks again.
