HIV infection and false reactive VDRL test
      #115716 - 11/20/04 06:32 AM

Hi everyone! Is there a way to relate a false reactive VDRL test with the early stages of HIV infection??? Yesterday, I got my blood tests results, and... HIV came back Negative, but VDRL came back wrong, and they asked me to return today to repeat the test... I am super nervous. If I got the second test reacitve again, will that mean I may be in the early acute HIV infection period? Please, your answers/comments are truly appreciated.

VDRL is for syphilis and therefore not related to HIV test at all so don't worry...syphilis can be kill of quite easily with a shot of penicilin or some doxycycline...Good luck in your HIV test..

Update: My second VDRL test came back Reactive 4 dills!... The doctor at the lab asked me to be tested for syphilis using the FTA test. Again, I am really nervous. I'm conscious I've been engaged in sex, but it has ALWAYS been protected sex, and now I don't understand how I could have got an STD whichever it is I have. I feel 100% OK. If I've got syphilis, I know I will have penicillin against it. My worst fear is this to be related with HIV infection. Again, my latest HIV (yesterday)came back negative, which indicates I was OK until August (3-month window period). I don't know what to think any more. Thanks for your kind responses.

If u tested begative for HIV 12 weeks after the last incident in augest...then u are negative...syphilis can be transmitted even with a condom on because the shaft of the penis are sometimes not covered..

I absolutely agree. You have tested negative for HIV at the recommended period, and can therefore rule this out. Your result for syphillis has no effect on this and, as implied before, syphillis is a much more easily transmitable (and luckily for you) treatable condition than HIV. Relax.....and play safe.
