Please help! I had sex with positive male.
      #115601 - 11/18/04 08:58 PM

Hi All,

My risk was unprotected sex with a positive partner and the condom broke. One week after the exposure, I had diarreha for a couple of days and then it went away. The following week I had diarreha, headaches, sore throat, and body aches that last for a week. Since then, I've had numerous headaches and diarreha more than 5 times a month. Also, I had a wierd experience where I took sudifed and had an allergic reation and was itching all night. I took it again a few days later to see if it would happen again and it did. I've taken sudifed in the past all the time and this has never happened. Why would all of sudden would my body have an allergic reation? Also, I'm experiencing severe fatigue. I've tested negative at 7 weeks but I'm convinced based off my bodys reaction that I will turn postive here soon. My questions are do these sound like ARS symptoms or hiv symptoms in general? Also, based on my partners status how long should I test? Please help!

7 week negative puts you in the 95% of a all clear only people with bad immune systems would test positive after 7 weeks

I can understand your fear, i had the same thing happen to me only there was no condom at all. It is very scary but the odds are in your favor. I turned out negative and im sure with a 7 week negative that you are negative as well. Stress can make you have all of those weird symptoms and reactions, i had similiar ones. go to www.aidsmeds.com they have a fear of hiv forum where u can post questions and the people over there are more experienced with this and they are wonderful. God Bless You, My prayers are with you

The "Window" Period Just After Infection

One major drawback of antibody tests is the "window" period: the time it takes the body to produce antibodies after infection has begun. The standard tests for HIV do not detect the virus itself, but the antibodies that the body produces in response. During the period before the antibodies are produced, a person can be infected with HIV and can infect others, but still test negative on the HIV antibody test.

For the first tests licensed, this window period ranged from six to 12 weeks, but improved technology has allowed the detection of lower levels of antibodies, making it possible to identify them earlier. "Currently used tests can detect HIV infection between three and five weeks in most individuals," Constantine says. "This is true of just about all of the ELISAs and the rapid tests [discussed further below]. Some tests are a little more consistent in detecting at the three week period, but in general they are all equivalent." To some degree, he explains, "it also depends on the individual (who may not produce antibodies as fast as another)."

When you read the below link about ARS, you will clearly see what you describe sounds nothing like it.

I called Mass Health Dept today, they told me that 6 weeks is conclusive for almost everyone except for the ones who are extremely sick with immune system problems. If you are not one of them, your 7 week test is an excellent sign.
Remember stress cause more symptoms than the actual disease.

Jazz,

Thanks for the reply and link. However, I'm still concerned with the ARS since Headaches and diareha are symptoms. What about the allergic reation? I find this very distrubing. It's like me body is changing in some way. I usually get cold sores everytime I stress out and I havent had one since this whole ordeal. I find this strange as well because I've never been so stressed in my life as I am right now. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

WW

Dear All,

Thanks for all the replys. I'm trying to remain optomistic but it's difficult. I just started to get little bumps on my leg. They're white in color and dont look like pimples. Could I have folliculitis? Also, where all my hair follicles on my legs are are red? What does this mean?

Thanks,

WW

My thoughts are:
1. Your 7 week test is nearly conclusive as others have pointed out.

2. HIV is a difficult virus to transmit.

3. Your symptoms are in no way indicative of primary HIV infection.

Conclusion: Test again at 3 months and get your all clear.

Jazz

ARS does not occur at seven weeks after exposure. Your seven week test is extremely accurate but three months would be conclusive. My first nightmare three and a half years ago I had every symptom you describe and then some. Try not to focus on symptoms and just remember.you tested negative at 7 weeks!

Hi Jazz,

Thanks for the reply. However, how are my symtpoms in no way indicative of hiv infection?

Thanks,

WW

The happened one week after exposure. This is typically too soon for ARS. Plus, ARS symptoms are flu like in nature. Headache and bowel discomfort are not typical ARS symptoms.

7 weeks is time enought, of course retest at 12 weeks, the result likely be the same. Good Luck
