here is my story, about 5 months ago, i thought i was exposed to hiv, tested negative with home access, and consider the results to be conclusive...however, about 3 years ago, i had protected sex with a thai prostitute and performed unprotected oral sex on her... never really considered i had hiv although i got shingles about 6 months later...now that i look back on it, i am kinda worried that i may have contracted a different strain of hiv. in the past 5 months, i have been doing a lot of research on the symptoms of hiv and i felt like i had them all, after i tested negative, i quit looking stuff up on the net and they all pretty much went away, now the idea of my elisa hiv 1 test has gotten into my head and i am worried it may not have detected a strain of hiv from thailand...input and questions are appreciated, thanks

i am hiv positive, my doctor did a test to see what type of hiv strain i had. there are a few different strain out there from what i know of. most testing devices are made to monitor the most common strain, sorry i forgot what it was called. i do know that you can be infected with a strain of the virus that is resistant to drugs, which they also has tests to indicate if this is present and which drugs if any that you are resistant to.

If you test via an Elisa test or any standard antibody test it will detect antibodies no matter what strain you have.
