I must be infected
      #111900 - 09/24/04 03:21 PM

I did a dumb thing 8-ll-04 with escort (vaseline on condom red spot on penis right after-no sperm in condom) Anyway i came down with every symptom known (I am 55 year old male) fatique one month, peripheralneuropathy one month, and some sort of skin diseases -dermotographism) Any way i got tested in one month and another in 6 weeks still negative but still feel positive. My platelets went from 210(normal) to 175 (still normal) in two weeks. That is a 15 percent decrease. They say that is a big sign of Hiv. Im surprised doc didnt notice. Anyway I took hiv rna and hiv dna - should be b ack by mon or tues. I really dont want to live with this. I just feel so afraid. I seperated from wife 6 months ago and I have a young child. boy am i afraid. Any advice please respond

All I can say to you is what you "feel" is almost irrelevant to your HIV status. What you undoubtedly feel is guilt and fear leading to a lot of stress. Stress can cause all sorts of symptoms. For example if what you think is PN is tingling / numb sensations in your fingers / hands or toes / feet then go to any good website about stress and anxiety and you will see that listed as a common symptom. The same is true of feeling fatigued. I put dermotographism into google and - to my amazement - only got 2 'hits' and strange ones at that. Do you think that if this was even remotely associated with HIV/AIDS there is any way that there would not be thousands of hits??? Neither do I. Moreover, strange sensations in the skin, rashes etc. are also associated with stress.

I am sure any doctor would say that your platelet cound movement was meaningless - how do you know it does not move about up and down 15% every week? You never knew before. It is normal.

What is not meaningless is a six weeks after the event negative HIV test. That is very encouraging - in some places they would even tell you not to test any more. Point is: the vast majority of people will test positive within six weeks.

Now here is the bottom line - your risk was slight; your six week test is very encouraging, don't let "syptoms" be your guide (especially ones that are also associated with stress), test at 13 weeks, collect what is almost certain to be a negative result, and forget about it (except not to do things you feel bad about or put you in danger in future).

I too have dermotographism. How did you get diagnosed, by a dermatologist???? This skin disorder has nothing to do with sex. You should be taking Zyrtec everyday to control the itching and hives, known as "wales", not sure of the spelling, I'm sure you're having those symptoms. Dermotographism effects everything and anything that touches your skin. You will be sensitive and or allergic to products and chemicals that you never were before. There isn't much if any information on this syndrome, I'm thinking about starting a website so we can all share ideas and maybe help one and other. If anybody knows anything about Dermatographism, please share, mine is out of control. Can' wear make up anymore without getting rash, hives, facial swelling, itchy flaky scalp, my face flakes too, can't moisturize, just suffer with it. Please help!!!
