risk and symptoms
      #110909 - 08/27/04 05:18 PM

I am freaking out from an encounter I had in South Africa. I obtained the services of an escort and proceeded to have protected intercourse with her with two condoms on. I also proceeded to plave a finger in her vagina and anus without a condom on my finger. About 2-3 weeks later I had a rash which was itchy as well as some pimples on my chest papules and swollen glands in my necl. I also had bad headaches. I had a complete blood count and my white cells were high. I tested for HIV at 6 weeks which was negative. I just want to know if you think I was at any risk. Your comments are appreciated.

The 6 week test looks promising. You should still have a HIV-2 test since the suspected exposure was in Africa.Have the HIV-1 and HIV-2 tests at 12-13 weeks. Good luck and stay safe. -Jess

They automatically test for HIV2 in South Africa. how come you now saying a risk when everyone else generally says no risk?

I misread the post..I am sorry. Since you had sex with a condom, then you should be fine. As long as the condom did not break or tear, you are fine. You protected yourself and that was smart. There really is no risk from what you have said in the original post. You placed a finger in the vagina. There would be a chance if there was a deep cut or wound on your finger.there have been no documenedt cases of HIV from fingering. Good luck and stay safe.-Jess

BK2004 was saying there was a definite risk. Is he joking or what? There have not been any documented cases of transmission in this way according to Jess. Perhaps there is a very small risk. What do you think Jess? Thanks for you previous posts.

There is always a risk when we are talking about HIV when it comes to being in contact with bodily fluids and blood. There probably is a small risk. As I said, if there was a cut or wound on your finger, that could put you for risk. But the 6 weeks looks promising. A HIV-1 test would catch about 75% of HIV-2 antibodies. But the event that you described doesn't sound like too much to worry about. But just to set your mind at ease, have a test at 12 weeks. Good luck and stay safe.-Jess

Sounds like you will be fine...because of condom and first test. But definitely follow up with the next test.
