My situation is similar to others I've read, but I thought I'd post it anyways. I had unprotected sex with a girl of unknown status. I have never had an std, anal sex, or used intravenous drugs. She also assured me that she was clean. Nonetheless, I tested after 23 days (which I read was the average time for antibodies to show) and the results were negative. Given my exposure, wouldn't you say that it's extremely unlikely I would test positive after 8 or 12 weeks?

I agree with you, friend, that the statistics are on your side. You are right when you say that you tested at the time that the majority of people who will seroconvert already have. Also, the fact that you are not an IV drug user (which would increase the chances of you taking longer to seroconvert), you have no STDs that you know of (which could create a more direct path for the virus, as in the case of herpes for example)), and that the girl's hiv status is unknown (so she could very well be negative!) is ALL in your favor. Also, the risk from a one time exposure female to male is very low. So, yes, I would agree with you in saying that your chances of getting a positive result at 8 or 12 weeks is pretty low. But, remember that just because a risk is low does not mean it's nonexistant. I truly believe that you will test negative once again outside of the window period. Just remember for in the future that you MUST use protection every time that you are going to have relations with someone. Even if the numbers are on your side, you could have bad luck some day (in the same way that you could win the lottery, even though your chances are not very good). So remember to wrap it up every single time!!! I bet that after this experience you'll never forget to do that! ;) So...you most likely slid by a-ok this time. Your results give you a very good indication of a negative status. However, please retest outside of the window period. Come back to report your negative results!! ;) Good luck and stay safe. what if you get occasional cold sores on your mouth ? that is a type of herpes isnt it, so even if you didnt have a cold sore at the time of exposure the herpes virus is still in your system. does this make your chances higher of catching hiv ?

I think the herpies thing refers to open sores. From what i have read when there are open sores the body sheds more of the virus into the fluid contained in these sores. SO, if both of you did not have a nasty open weeping genital sore I would say you are worrying about the herpies thing too much, unless other people that post advice i heard different.
