Nursing Assistant with HIV

I am a Nursing Assistant that is HIV+. All of my Coworkers know and some of the families of my residents know nd it was hard at first. I was constintly reminded that I have HIV and that I have to be extra careful. Well I was always careful and I always use my proper percautions, but they are still hounding my keeping a close eye on me and I really can't stand it. They think that I will pass it on to my residents or something. I love all of my residents. Anyway HIV isn't that contagious as they all seem to think that it is. You would tend to think that they would have some more knowledge of HIV and AIDS with working in the health care feild but they don't. Finally my case worker came in and gave an inservice on HIV/AIDS and cleared up alot of questions that they had. Please remember someone who is HIV+ is still the same person that they were before you found out. If you treat them any different that is what really hurts there feelings and hurts them personally.

THANK YOU!!!! How great to know that you had the strength and courage to rise above the temptation of being bitter and to help educate your co-workers. I am a Nursing student (will be in the fall), and will be starting a new job as a Patient Care Tech. shortly. My partner is HIV-Positive. I worry about possible descrimination I may face as being the Negative partner to someone who is positive, as of yet i (we) have had very few bad experiences in telling people, parents not withstanding.
I hope that you continue to work as long as you are able to. I will be volunteering very shortly as a HIV test councelor, I am nervous about it, but at the same time very excited. I am hoping that I will be able to help people.
