PATH (Program for Appropriate Technology in Health) Position # 1284 Posted: 10/1/02 Title: Policy and Advocacy Specialist/Senior Policy and Advocacy Specialist Location: Washington, D.C., HIV and AIDS Strategic Program Starting Salary Range: Specialist: $53,000-$76,000, DOE; Senior Specialist $72,000- $103,300, DOE
The Policy and Advocacy Specialist would take a leading role in developing PATH's programmatic capacity in this area and would work with senior PATH leadership to identify and prioritize policy and advocacy opportunities.
The identified individual would also serve as a core member of PATH's HIV and AIDS Strategic Program Team and would work in partnership with other organizations to advance PATH's policy objectives related to HIV and STIs. PATH's current HIV priorities include work on woman-controlled methods, such as microbicides and the female condom, efforts to combat HIV-related discrimination and stigma, low-cost STI diagnostics, and efforts to change behavior and social norms.
Duties and Responsibilities: * Identifying, developing and implementing targeted advocacy strategies around issues that advance and serve the issues of the wider PATH organization. * Representing PATH and our HIV/STI program goals in key policy forums and coalitions. * Providing policy and advocacy support to the Global Campaign for Microbicides on issues related to clinical trial ethics, novel HIV prevention methods, and legislative outreach. * Working with the HIV and AIDS Strategic Program leader to further consolidate PATH's emerging agenda in HIV and AIDS.
Qualifications: * Master's degree in public health or other field related to the position. * A minimum of 8 years of experience (or minimum of 10 years experience for a senior-level position) in public health * Demonstrated ability to conduct sophisticated policy analysis, move social agendas, and work in coalition * Demonstrated excellent research and writing skills * Familiarity and skills in HIV/STI related issues * Experience working in diverse cultural settings and sensitivity to local context * Demonstrated ability to effectively manage people * Experience in forming and sustaining effective partnerships * Available for up to 20% domestic and international travel combined Additional knowledge, experience, and skills desired but not required: * Familiarity with the Washington, D.C. policy environment * Experience working in developing country settings * Knowledge of technology or drug development, clinical testing, and ethics * Work experience in the Executive or Legislative branch of government.
