Director of Treatment & Prevention Advocacy
Primary functions:
The Director of Treatment & Prevention Advocacy is responsible for the strategic direction and implementation of Project Inform’s HIV/AIDS research and treatment advocacy efforts, including involvement in research and treatment advocacy regarding co-infections such as hepatitis C; supports the agency’s efforts to assess and advocate for biomedical HIV prevention strategies; supports the agency’s treatment and health care information programs; and supports the agency’s public policy and health care advocacy efforts.

Duties and responsibilities:

Establishes the strategic goals of Project Inform’s HIV/AIDS research and treatment advocacy efforts in coordination with the Executive Director and Program Team
Plans and carries out agency activities to support the development of safe and effective therapeutics to treat and cure HIV infection
Plans and carries out agency activities to support the development of safe and effective therapeutics to treat and cure co-infections that occur with HIV, particularly hepatitis C
Plans and carries out agency activities to support research regarding potential biomedical HIV prevention strategies
Supports the development and delivery of Project Inform’s treatment and health care information
Serves as a scientific advisor to the Information & Outreach Department to assure the accuracy of all information produced and presented by the agency
Works closely with the Director of Information & Outreach to determine what treatment and health care information should be provided by the agency
Participates in the writing and editing of treatment and health care related information produced by the agency
Serves as a presenter at Project Inform sponsored Town Meetings and other meetings, as necessary
Supports training of Project Inform staff and volunteers regarding treatment and biomedical prevention issues
Works closely with the Public Policy Department on overlapping areas of engagement, such as hepatitis C advocacy, biomedical prevention advocacy, and drug pricing
Works closely with other HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C and biomedical prevention advocates, research organizations and pharmaceutical companies to enhance Project Inform’s impact on HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C research and treatment, as well as biomedical prevention
Leads Project Inform sponsored think tank style meetings to advance research and advocacy in the areas of HIV/AIDS treatment, hepatitis C treatment and biomedical HIV prevention
Represents Project Inform to the press, community groups and other organizations with regard to the agency’s positions on issues and to educate the public about HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C research and treatment, as well as biomedical prevention issues
Assists in agency leadership
Serves as a member of the Program Team and the Communications Team
Attends meetings of the Board of Director
Supports the careful coordination of efforts among the three program departments of the agency
Supports fund development activities to assure success of the Treatment & Prevention Advocacy Department’s efforts
Identifies and supervises interns and high-level volunteers to support the work of the Treatment & Prevention Advocacy Department
Other duties as assigned
Desired qualifications:

A keen sense of current and future needs for strengthening HIV treatment and cure related research and therapeutic development, and for achieving greater control of the domestic HIV/AIDS epidemic generally
Demonstrated ability to lead efforts to strengthen HIV treatment and cure related research and therapeutic development
Excellent knowledge of HIV disease pathogenesis and treatment
Above average knowledge of hepatitis C pathogenesis and treatment, and biomedical HIV prevention strategies
Experience in HIV/AIDS research and treatment activism desirable but not required
Clinical experience in HIV/AIDS care and treatment desirable but not required
Knowledge of basic research, drug development and approval structures and organizations
Ability to work well with others and build a team
Excellent project planning and administration skills, including planning of small conferences
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking
Excellent problem solving skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks and re-prioritize on short notice
Ability to speak/write in Spanish strongly encouraged
Ability and willingness to travel, as required
Demonstrated experience in inspiring, mentoring and supervising employees, interns and volunteers
Location: Open for discussion. San Francisco or remote.
