Travelling with HIV Meds
      #91290 - 03/05/04 03:03 PM

I am on 6 meds and I'm going the U.K., France, Germany, and Italy for a month. I'll be carrying alot of bottles. Has anyone had any experience taking medications through customs in these countries? Any suggestions for what I should do: try to hide them, leave them in the original bottles, send them in advance by FedEx? Thanks alot for your help.

I've never been checked going into customs in the U.K. and once you are in "europe" like france...there are no borders to get into Italy or Germany. So depending on how you travel, it'll be fine. Besides, as far as I know, the UK, France Germany etc all let people with HIV in as tourists....that's why the international AIDS conference hasn't been held in the US. The US is one of a bunch of mostly undeveloped countries that doesn't allow people with HIV to visit.

Take a look at this:

As I've said, I've traveled extensively through Europe and as long as you have a precription for your medications it should be fine...Just don't check them in case your luggage is lost!

I've travelled internationally quite a bit since finding out that I have HIV. While mostly correct, the first reply was incomplete. When travelling internationally with meds, you should ALWAYS (regardless of the country):

-- Carry your meds in the original bottles.

-- Carry paper prescriptions for all your meds

That way, if you do get questioned at customs (although I never have), you can prove that you're legitimately carrying the meds for your personal use.

Additionally, if you're going anywhere that's at all questionable in terms of water or food safety, you should carry a bottle of Cipro, or another broad-spectrum antibiotic. If you do get infected with something, you want to nip it in the bud, before it gets serious. Be sure to complete the cycle of antibiotics, even if you start to feel better.

Hope this helps.

Good advice. I've entered a number of European countries and never had any problems at all. The fact is, you are unlikely to be stopped for Customs inspection anyway, so long as you go through the "nothing to declare" lane.

I've been POZ for almost 20 years, and travled extensively to europe. I've had no problems what so ever. I would keep the meds in the original bottles, AND take a copy of the perscriptions. The biggest challenge is if your on a regimen, where one of meds calls for refrigeration. (used to be on norvir capsules), which required to be refrigerated. First time I travled, I put them on ice, which is the WRONG thing to do. They all fuse together. Good luck and have a good time.

Unlike visitors to the US, you will not be refused a tourist visa or entry to European countries just because you are HIV+. I travel extensively in Europe and can assure you that you will not have a problem. As advised by the other posts, keep your meds in original bottles (I don't believe it is necessary to bring a prescription). I have been stopped on two occasions, but they showed absolutely no interest in my medications, the were more concerned about drink, cigarettes and drugs. Anything in original packaging was ignored. Don't worry - have a good time..

I've travelled to several of the countries mentioned (and a few others). I have always kept my meds in the original bottles and have had no problems.
