The experience of a partner dying...
      #78 - 03/29/00 12:13 AM

5 years ago, my partner of 9 years died of AIDS. The experience
of taking care of him through his illness changed my life. I
decided to help other gay men pass through the process of dying
from AIDS. I knew that I could help, and be there for them
without judgement of any kind. I started to work for an in home
health care company as Certified Home Health Aide. I could help,
but not on the level that I wanted to. I went back to school for
my LVN. This has been the hardest, and yet the most rewarding,
time of my life; that is now changing. The cases of gay men
needing my assistance, with the level of education I have, has
greatly diminished. What a wonderful problem to have; there are
not enough gay men dying of this disease to keep me in demand.

Hi Ken! Yes, these new meds are putting so many supportive services out of business. It's really fabulous. I used to work on an AIDS floor of a major city hospital. It's only 30% AIDS now--it's 70% geriatrics! There are still people who need your skills though! Good luck! Karen

hi ken, i'm sorry to hear about the death of your loved one. i'm also a lpn student... i don't have hiv however am writing a paper on the subject and i'm finding out a lot that i never thought about... the main thing that i have noticed is that there are still a lot of people that don't understand the disease and how it is acquired... but let's thank God that you may have to change your field of study because "not enough people are dieing.
