I was first diagnosed w/ condyloma (Venereal warts) in the late 80's and had laser surgery to remove the stubborn critters. No re-occurances for a LONG time. I've noticed within the last 6 or 8 months they have definately come back! My cd4 dropped to 90 about 5 months ago and viral load went from undetectable to, like 10,000. Since then I switched cocktails and am now undetectable again w/ cd4 of 213. Does anybody know if this might be the reason they came back, and can I now expect them to go away or am I stuck with 'em? I haven't had anal sex in years. Does anybody have any info about this? Thanks!

Butchcat,
I hear your pain, as I have battled these critters for years. Essentially the warts are caused by the HPV virus and can reccur at anytime. The fact that your CD4s dropped and your VL increased could be the cause for their return, but not necessarily. I have found the real reason that they return, is that you did not get them all through the surgery. Some of the warts can be almost microscopic and if your surgeon misses even one or two, presto, they can come back.
You do not say if all of your warts are external or both external and internal. So here is what worked for me. For the external warts, there is Aldara cream, which works quite well for topical use (outside) but cannot be used internally. So I suggest you seek a consult with a doctor who can give you an extensive checkup to see where ALL the warts are located. If they are only external, try the Aldara cream. If they are both internal and external, I am afraid that they must be surgically removed. It is the only way to get all the little critters.
Also, these warts can be transmitted from one part of the body to another. So if you have some, say on your penis or in your groin area, it would be possible to transmit them from your penis to your rectum. That is why you need a doctor to really check you out, to determine where all the warts are located. You can then treat them aggressively. I had to use the Aldara for 6 months and have 2 surgeries. But after aggressive treatment for a year, they have never returned.
And lastly, unfortunately the HPV virus stays in your system, so your warts may return at a future date, but hopefully that will not occur. I hope this helped.
