How early can HIV be detected? I was exposed about three weeks ago, is there a test for that time period?

Yes it was a very high risk encounter. Anal sex, ejaculation in the rectum from an infected person.

If you have insurance, see your doctor ASAP and see if he's willing to do viral load test, which will detect the high virus levels in your blood right now IF you've become infected. The virus levels will begin to drop as your body starts producing antibodies. Some people say antibody production begins as early as two weeks into infection, but most agree that antibodies are being produced no later than 16 weeks. If you don't have insurance or money, find out where to get help in your area and be prepared to wait to do an antibody test. Public health organizations generally can't afford the expensive viral load tests for new clients who may not even be HIV-positive, but antibody tests are inexpensive and many times free and anonymous.

If you have such high viral levels in your blood, why in the hell would it be necessary to use PCR to see it?
If there are hundreds of thousands of copies in the blood, we should be able to see it without the aid of a replecating machine.
