Pneumocystis carinii Pneumonia (PCP)
      #41041 - 09/30/02 01:50 PM

Hello all. Does anyone know of any newer meds for the prevention of another episode PCP? I have tried with fail: Bactrim (allergic to sulfa), Dapsone (causes severe rashs), Pentamidine (if anyone has ever used it you'll know what it does). I am currently taking Mepron but can't tolerate the horrible side effects any longer.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi

It seems to me that you have tried pretty much all the medications which have been studied for prevention of PCP. One option may be a desensitization protocol for Bactrim. People who have allergic reactions to Bactrim can go through a procedure where they are slowly given ever increasing doses of the drug to aid in desensitizing them to it. I don't know if your physician has mentioned this but it may be an option for you. Hope this helps.
