sustiva holiday - me too
      #38993 - 08/28/02 09:00 PM

I tested positive for HIV in February of 2001 - my numbers are 250 T-cell and 0 viral load. Before I started the antiviral program, my T-cells were >85 and my load was 40-45,000. I've been on the antiviral program for a little over a year. When I started the therapy, the little [censored] things made me dizzy, sweaty and sick. The problem is is that they still occasionally do this. I've been thinking of taking a holiday and putting some long overdue faith in God himself for a change. But I'm frightened to take such a leap. The drugs seem to be causing problems with my upper digestive system - sometimes I feel like they're going to back up my throat
like I'm vomiting or coughing bile. But I also don't want to risk having to go on something stronger if I do take a break and end up getting pelted by the virus even harder.
what to do?

Comment on your problems with the meds - do you take your other meds separate from the Sustiva? I have always separated the other meds (Zerit, Epivir) from the Sustiva. Zerit & Epivir at breakfast and dinner, Sustiva at bedtime. I can still get "wowed" by the Sustiva after almost 4 years, if I have a high fat dinner meal. It can cause the Sustiva to be absorbed at a much higher rate, like 150% of normal. You may also benefit from an acid blocker, like Pepcid AC (I do not recommend Prilosec, for numerous reasons - read all of the package insert). Take the Sustiva with something like soda crackers, as it will upset an empty stomach sometimes. Otherwise, take the other medications if you can with food, as it moderates the side effects.

I posted the original Sustiva Holiday question. I appreciate all of the input, read the article suggested and will discuss further with my MD, as I may be forced due to insurance, money situations.
