anyone else taking serotism???
      #3236 - 04/06/00 01:50 PM

I recently started taking serostim (growth hormone) after a long battle
with my insurance company to pay for it. Has anyone else out there had
any good rsults from using this drug???? I must admit, I am not really
"wasting" per se, but my body has definitely changed thanks to 3+
years on protease drugs....
If you have any info to share on this topic it would be
appreciated..Thanks, mark

Try http://www.medibolics.com/

Searching the vast AEGIS library at
www.aegis.com also turns up many useful
articles, particularly by Dave Gilden for
GMHC's Treatment Issues.

At the present time, there is more published
literature on the benefits of testosterone
cypionate for treating wasting than there is for
Serostim. Serostim was originally rejected for
accelerated approval by the FDA due to lack of
convincing data - this decision was only
overturned as a result of lobbying by
individuals from a Phase I study that showed
benefit in terms of weight gain and treadmill
performance. The Serostim formulation used
in this early study is slightly different than the
current formulation, and also the drug was
dosed based on bodyweight.

Serostim is still not fully approved, and won't
be until the company that makes it, Serono
Labs, submits confirmatory data to the FDA
demonstrating clinical benefits in the treatment
of wasting. Currently, Serono is trying to
promote Serostim for the treatment of the HIV
drug side effect known as lipodystophy based
on a case series of 5 people. The doctor that
originally reported this case series says that
the slight benefits of Serostim waned over the
course of a few months. There was also no
change in blood lipid levels, one of the most
serious consequences of lipodystrophy.

As you'll also find on Michael Mooney's
website, Serono appear to be engaging in the
practice of offering "kick-backs" to people that
prescribe Serostim.

Mark,
I have been taking serostim for about a year and a half. When I started
on the drug I had wasted to 90 pounds. I find the drug has worked well
for me and even when my appetite is poor from the medication or
illness, I am able to maintain my weight. And I dont mean just my
weight, my lean muscle weight.
