last week I was diagnosed with shingles. I didn't get nearly the attention of the doctors or information I needed. Oh sure I recieved a prescription but not much information. I'm taking acyclovir (sp?) It is painful to sleep and my leg looks awfuly angry. Will this go totaly away or will it reoccur? I know it is a virus that follows a nerve The back of my leg feels like it has been burned, almost like a bad sunburn. Can someone please help me out? Terry

terry , i suffered singles about a year before i was diaganosed as poz hiv , it is the most awful ailment to go through , i can handle pain but that was hard to deal with after getting on medication , which at the moment i dont remember what it was , it started to go away as quickly as it came , dont worry i have had no reacurrences or long term effects from it , if you care to chat some more about it i would love to hear from you , i live in oregon and am very healthy at this point , the shingles was scary to me also ,but i got over it , good luck to you , my email address is : rfsinorg@hotmail.com

When you have shingles, is it so painful that you definitely know that's what you have? Does it just look like little red dots or is there a red rash beneath the dots? Does it sometimes just itch or is there usually severe pain involved? Thanks for your help!

Shingles is a recurrence of the virus (herpes zoster) that causes chickenpox when you are a kid. Treatment will usually put it in remission, but it is possible for it to reoccur. Seems to be more prevalent in people with various chronic conditions like HIV, diabetes, arthritis.

I do understand what you are going through.The pain is so bad coz the infection follows the nerves.Not many people have knowledge about shingles.You may need strong painkillers for a couple of months but the pain settle at last.The infection rarely reoccur but I have seen people who the infection twice.Hope you get better soon.
