Hello everyone!! I am a 36 year old man who has been HIV + for about 12 years. I have been on long term "cocktail therapy" (Crixivan /Combivir) for almost 3 years. My CD4 counts have risen from an all time low of 65 to 402 and viral load from 480,000 to undetecable at < 20 copies. My weight has also increased by approximately 25 pounds since starting with some fat distribution. My triglycerdies and choloesteral have starting to creep into the high values. My doc has now suggested dropping Crixivan for Sustiva? He states of the 50 patients in his practice that have done this only 1 has not maintained undetecable viral loads. I would enjoy the flexibility of the dosing regiment with Sustiva and the possibilities of decreasing my chances of long term cardiovascular disease? Is there anyone out there who has had success in making this change? Was the change worth it? Please help if you can!! Thanks!

I just wanted to let you know that I am taking Sustiva right now. Most people that I know who have had undetectable viral loads seem to be able to keep them undetectable with the Sustiva. As you know, it depends on the individual. I personally have never been able to get my counts down. Good Luck!

Bentley - Being new to this board - I think I posted a reply to you in error. I just wanted to say "Thanks" for giving me some information that will help me to make a difficult decision. I always believe that if we are better informed - we deal better with the process of change. Thanks Again for your reply!! Marc in DC

I've been on meds since 1/93, and have taken virutally everything that's possible to take along the way.
I have been on Sustiva since January. I have evolved to taking it with dinner, so to avoid being awake when the side effects take hold. It is like being on acid in all honesty. I would just caution you to make sure you can stay home when you first take it, to see what side effects (if any) you experience. The first week was rough, the side effects can be rather strong and persistent.
The decision is of course, yours to make on whether or not to take the Sustiva. The side effects are real, and can be weirdly disorienting. If you think you need to change, there may be other options.
Good luck! These days, my body has acclimated to the drug, and what I have are some really bizarre dreams. Personally, I seem to have derived no real benefit from my current combo of Abacavir, Angerase and Sustiva. The weirdest side effects are that when I move my head, or turn too quickly, I can get really dizzy and feel unable to remain steady.

Brother,
Crixivan will raise your cholesterol levels up so high you will die of heart disease way before AIDS will kill you. Sustiva gives some people bad dreams and psychotic episodes, it did for me; and, viral resistance to Sustiva happens very easily. I became resistant within a few months, others can be on it for years.
Crix is poison, man.
