My Gay HIV+ Life in Portland Oregon
      #266683 - 09/17/12 11:00 AM

My name is Roger Walcker. I am an "out and proud" gay Christian Architect (University of Oregon, class of 1974). Since July, 2006, I have been HIV+. My doctor in Vestal, NY, gave me 3 months to live.I was life-flighted from Syracuse, NY to Portland and driven home, to The Dalles, to die! I weighed 95 pounds, having lost 90 pounds! My t-cell count was 46! I was told to contact Dr.James Sampson, Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland ASAP! He is anIHIV/ AIDS specialist. A week later, I was in Dr. Sampson's exam room. Dr Sampson took my hand and said: "Roger, you are NOT going to die! I will prescribe stonger med and fewer meds. I am involved with many HIV / AIDS studies. You will get better and stonger each month! I promise, Roger, you are NOT going to die!" I cried unashamedly! Dr. Sampson was SO right! I got so much better, I moved to Portland in October, 2007. I was is in my 1st AIDS Walk that month. Last October 2nd. I and 20 others who are also HIV+, were invited to lead the 2011 AIDS Walk. We led 10,000 Walkers from the Pioneer Courthouse Square to the Pearl District and back, 2 1/2 miles and earned $465,000 for Casade AIDS Project! Both numbers are ALL TIME records! This September 23rd, I will Walk in the 2012 AIDS Walk in Portland. I am healthy and thrving and thanking Dr. Sampson and God for protecting me and for giving me my future opitimism! Sincerely, Roger Walcker (and yes, my last name IS spelled queerly!)

Great story, Inspiring how involved you are with the gay community. I feel I need inspiring people in my life, to share experiences and for mutual support. Keep your good spirit up! Happy to read you connected with a great Doctor. My experience with my first Doctor was not very supportive, now I have a great medical team.
