I have found a support group in my area and I wanted to reach out to other gay men to see what your experiences, if any, have been with being part of a support group....really have noone else to talk to or lean on when it comes to HIV issues

When I first tested positive I attended a closed Shanti support group and it turned out most of the other guys were in the same situation: recently diagnosed, working full time, and dating. The group was helpful to navigate the ins and outs of treatment, disclosure, and the like--not only to hear other people's ideas and concerns, but also to voice my own. After about a year the group was opened again to new members, and they all happened to be long-term survivors. They were all dealing with major issues--getting toenails removed because of Crixivan side-effects, having to deal with a pic line, and all sorts of stuff we weren't prepared for. After a couple of months of this, the group sort of fell apart.
I'm lucky to be living in Long Beach, CA where there are a number of groups, and recently I started a group for those who were recently diagnosed at The Center in Long Beach. If you're reading this and live in the area, I'll post the 411 in the classifieds section here.
My feeling is that if a group is a decent fit for the issues you're looking to deal with, it can help a lot.

It can be a good experience. In one of the support groups that I attended, I met a person who has become a good friend to me. However, he happens to be the only friend I met in the support group.
