Traveling to Africa/Yellow Fever Vaccination
      #250663 - 06/08/10 06:33 PM

Hey, got a question. I am going to be traveling to Togo and Benin in about three months. I CAN NOT get my doctor to give me the "blessing" to go ahead and get the Yellow Fever Vaccination. Although, I have had it once before back in like 1994, and DID NOT experience any issues at that time when I received the jab in the arm. I NEED to get this vaccination again. The initial shot is only good for a ten year span. I just got off the telephone with "travel nurse" who administers the vaccines in this area and she did, what I think, an excellent job in explaining it in "laymens" terms.
--------Since you have already had the vaccine about 15 years ago, you alread have it in your immune system and/or body. Therefore, more or less, you are simply getting a booster when you decide to come and get another Yellow Fever Vaccination. She explained it as, "your waking up your army to the virus." She felt that if I did not experience any problems with the vaccine 15 years ago, it would be highly unlikely that I would now. ------------

I am writing this in the forums so that other potential travelers can discuss their experience with the same issue. I'm sure that I am not the only one in here who has ever experienced the HIV+ issue and needing the Yellow Fever Vaccination.
