HIV and immigration OUT of USA
      #250521 - 05/26/10 11:12 PM

I am HIV+. My life is now over before it even began. All I want is someone to share my life with. I have tried, and cannot get a boyfriend... I have a responsibility to tell them I am positive, and that always scares them off... so I figure I should indulge my passions and do what I have always wanted to do... leave the United States. But now, I discover that there are no nations that I can find that will take an HIV+ person. I am gainfully employed, and good at what I do, with a degree..etc.etc. I pay my own way... the only assistance that I have is with my medication, because I cannot afford it. But that is the only assistance I accept. Now, I understand that even if I were paying for my own medications, that I can STILL be denied entry to most nations because of my status.
Has anyone else encountered this ? What can I do?

Well, I can say that is not exactly right, although several countries deny entry to HIV positive people, many others don´t. You can check out this website: http://hivtravel.org/

Hello, Dizengoff. The website that Charlie gave you is a good resource. I travel internationally for my job, and have lived in six countries throughout my life. I am also concerned about foreign immigration with my new positive status, but the truth is that more and more countries are dropping the ban on travel and immigration for HIV+ people.
I want you to know that your life is not over! Trust me, those words have gone through my head recently as well, but you have a lot of living to do, and I commend you on seeking those things you're passionate about, like world travel. Choose a nation that accepts HIV+ travelers/immigrants and make sure that the nation also has good HIV health care. This isn't a time to be moving to the third-world.. I'm at the airport now, catching an international flight. Good luck to you and happy travels! --Josh

I know South Africa doesn't ban HIV+ people. I really don't know the requirements to get permanent residency since I am there for less than 6 months a year every year. One GOOD thing is meds are NOTHING compared to what they want in the states. My Truvada + Reyataz regimen costs about $100 per month outright. That and most others are in the same range. I just get a script from my doctor there and fill it at the pharmacy/chemist. Here the same is $2000! My co-pay with insurance is about $100 per month.

The medical system is amazing compared to this really shit system.

I believe the United Kingdom doesn't bar people moving to the country because of their HIV status. HAART is also completely free of charge on the National Health Service along with all standard blood monitoringl, access to health advisors and psycologists which specialise in HIV.
