I am sorry to hear about your diagnoses, but your life is not over. This is virus has become for most a chronic and manageable disease. You have heard the number that there are 40 million hiv positive world wide. Take stock of yourself, and live your life. The advancements are huge in the last 10 years. We do however, have a long way to go. I was diagnosed a year ago. I started advising my sexual partners to find where I contracted the virus, and came here for support. Shock is the first thing that I felt, as you have mentioned how did this happen to me. Give yourself a chance to accept your new diagnoses. It is important to find a good infectious disease specialist and you should contact your local aids organization to find the help you may need for not only medical care but also your psychological and emotional health. You have worth, and you have a place in this world. Be good to yourself, hope to hear more from you. D

Thanks D. The hardest thing I find is believing that it is true. I guess I felt invincible...I made an appointment with a doc to get my viral load and my cd4 count and have been reading up and what I should ask. Are you on treatment yet?

Well, Ned I was diagnoised last year in January, I started treatment in March... I fell into a deep depression and gained weight. I am now looking out for myself and starting to realize that I am at the beginning of this journey. The meds are good comparitively to what they were 12 years ago, they are easily tolerated and most of us only have to take one or two pills a day. So don't worry, and keep that head up..... BE GOOD TO YOURSELF... D

Hey Ned!
I have been diagnosed for one year now. Find a competent infectious disease doctor in your area. Ask your doctor for a referal if they are not one themselves. Learn the basics upfront so you will be able to comprehend lab testings. This is an awesome site for doing that.

If they recommend immeadiate drug therapy then be sure to accept. It's rough at first adjusting to the medication but will ease within a few short months. From that point on, be sure to follow up with doctor visits.

If you have no insurance, or have low income ask about the Ryan White Program which assists with the cost of HIV medications and much more.

Take Care of yourself!

I am not sure if you live near one but an Aids outreach organization has been an an invaluable asset for me since I tested positive in Jan. It has been very up and down emotionally for me the last 2 months since being told. Last week was the worst so far. Conversely, this week was the best one i can remember in a very long time. I felt positive, engaged, grateful to be alive and happy every day with no moments of OMG I HAVE HIV I AM SO F*CKED. I think maybe the diagnosis and what my bloodwork says about my near term prognosis are settling in. I went to the gym 5 days this week, I ate right every night but one ( had 2 hot dogs and sweet potatoe fries). I slept at night. i went to work 6 days. Someone made some moves on me, I didnt respond I am kind of not at all interested at the moment but one thing is for sure . Life goes on and i am living and living well. Your life is not over. If there is anything I am 100% sure of you have much more ahead of you than behind you.

first try to maintain a positive attitude. its not the end of the world. i have lived with this for 20+ years now and am undetectable to the eye. be honest with yourself and others mainly those you are about to sleep with. you don't want that shit coming back on you and most of all, see you doctor, take your meds, find support and don't let it get you down. believe me, you are not alone my friend.
