Hi,
I have been successly treated with Trizivir for four years (since becoming HIV+). All was well until a few weeks ago I noticed the dreaded hump starting to appear behind my neck.
I would like to hear experiences from anyone going through this type of lypodystrophy. Things like, how yours progressed over time, anyone notice a slight hump that did not progressively get worse?, any testimonies of anything that helped (switiching from PIs to NRTI's, serostim, lyposuction, etc.).
Thanks for any information or testimonials you can provide.
Mike

Why not change therapy to see if that will help? Try Atripla. None of the drugs in that pill cause body shape changes (although they have other side effects). Karen

I have been HIV+ since 2000. I was infected by my husband, who disappeared when he realized he was positive and failed to tell me...I have been on Combivir and Viramune for 6 years and other than the "usual" issues (itching, diarreah, vomiting and dreams of constant frustration I was doing pretty well. THEN about 6 months ago I experienced an abnormal weight gain in my torso. I gained 15 inches in six months...just in my torso. I began research on acquired lipodystrophy only to learn that little is known about it...and nobody has any answers about its progression. I have not experienced the buffalo hump but having a large "gut" for the first time in my life is awful. I may get the buffalo hump since no one knows how to reverse this nor help with it. I am trying diet and see a little difference but not much. One local doctor refuses to perform lyposuction since I am HIV. I have done a "supervised interruption" of the meds and am not sure what the effect of that is yet...not much, really. I know this isn't what you wanted on in-put but sharing our issues may help someday. (P.S. I will be 73 years old next month...this ain't no way to live out your last years!!)

the only thing i could find to correct this with myself was to get it removed..which i did and my insurance paid for it...my doctor told my insurance company it was causing problems with my posture...i could not find anything else that would help..once there it will not go away...

I've dealt with this since around 1996 when I started taking Crixivan which brought VL from over 100,000 to <400 in 4 months. It's a trade off I accept for undetectable viral load. I have gotten into the habit of wearing large T-shirts and keep pulling the neck up to hide the hump. Or I wear button shirts. I also wear a towel around my neck at the gym. I don't think I will opt for liposuction as I don't want to risk an invasive procedure. Unrelated to the hump but interesting, I started taking Transfer Factor Plus in 2000 and have seen my yearly average T-cell counts go from 547 in 200 to 823 in 2005. Has anyone else found this food supplement to boost T-cells?

Yes, I've heard the buffalo hump reffered to as a Crix hump. I have seen several guys with these. My impression is that the fatty deposits which form are the result of supression of liver function (lipodystrophy). Therefore fatty deposits are looking for a place to form....and some people have the hump while others find it accumulating around the waist or somewhere else.
I read some interesting accounts of liposuction treatment on the AIDSMEDS forum.

This is the post I was referring to from AidsMeds. I think, as with any medical proceedure , that there are risks and its good to know what the negative as well as positive side effects are: I had lypo for dorsal fat (Buffalo Hump, but I like the term better) The first time it took away 90% of the fat. But a year later it came back. I had lypo a second time. This time the surgeon could only get around 80% out because of scar tissue. He said he had a hard time (because of scar tissue) and that any future procedures would not be able to use lypo anymore because of scarring caused. The candala could not get through all of the thick scar tissue that formed. I changed all of my meds, and another year later it has returned. The surgeon said he could try to cut it out but it would require a large incision. I was not going to do it, but it is getting worse and worse. I have a hard time turning my head from side to side, it is pushing my head forward in an uncomfortable position. I may consider it. But I know it will be more expensive and it may come back yet again.
