Hey Guys: I am looking for ANY information on the layer of FAT you get on your belly from protease inhibitors. The news just gets worse because you get a layer of fat on the back of your neck, too. JUST LIKE A BUFFALO. There is NO surgical solution. Please let me know if you KNOW ANYTHING. Thanks Barron

There is much skepticism about whether or not PI's are associated with this "syndrome." (Buffalo hump, crix belly.) There have been reports of HIV patients not using Protease Inhibitors and still developing this syndrome. Another theory is that the "syndrome" is caused by serum metabolic abnormalities. Still, it is unclear whether or not the syndrome is caused by protease inhibitors or an epiphenomenon of combination antiretroviral therapy. I have heard that there is no cure for this syndrom, however, the fat can be removed by lyposuction or surgery. You may want to ask a professional about the efficacy of lyposuction with these symptoms. Good luck, and take care. Josh

I too have had that problem with the PIs. The only help that I have found is to eat a very low fat diet and do resistance training with weights and areobic exercise 3 times a week. It may take a while but keep it up and you will see the results
