Gay Men and HPV
      #108823 - 08/13/04 03:40 PM

I was diagnosed in 2003 with the HPV virus. It was enough having been previously diagnosed with HIV and HCV. Now I was dealing with a third virus, one which would lead to Rectal Cancer. I was told that the only thing I could do was wait and monitor the progression.

In June of 2004, I had a colonoscopy, where they found a lesion that was benign. I have recently seen a surgeon, who will be performing a two part surgery on me next month. One, they will cut out any lesions found and then laser the surface of my rectum and anus where there are any bumps. Let's just say I am ok with this intellectually, but emotionally I am not having such a great time.

I am a little peturbed at the fact that no one seems to be talking about this virus. As well, it is more easily contracted just by contact not blood or semen. Secondly, why isn't anyone talking about this disease? This is just as serious if not more serious than HIV and HCV. There are no medications to take, plus you have to undergo an evasive procedure to rectify the problem and only temporarily.

I am just wanting to know if anyone out there is dealing with this issue, has dealt with this issue. If anyone knows of any promising research on this topic. I certainly wouldn't mind a friend who knows something about something regarding HPV.

Hope to hear back from someone soon.

I can't help but wonder if the high amounts of toxic benzoate preservatives in sexual lubricants (vcommonly used for anal sex by gay men) would contribute to the appearance of lesions and/or swollen lymphnodes in the rectum, as you have described. I've noticed that some companies have been offering benzoate-free alternatives like the product, Probe, but many are still using benzoates because they're easily soluble and cheap.

I am dealing with the same problem. I was diagnosed HIV+ two years ago and was diagnosed with HPV about three months later. I got it from the same person but it did not show up until later. I have had about 9 procedures done to help with the HPV but as you said, it is only temporary. The doctor said that like HIV, there is no cure. It's pretty disheartening to find out that you have two incurable diseases. I wish there was something that could be done. Maybe someday...

I also have HIV, HBV and HPV. I had 3 procedures to remove pre-cancerous lesions. Fortunately, I have been lesion free for over 2 years. None of my doctors know for sure what helped me clear them, but HAART seems to help. Whie it's really a pain in the ass to deal with - there is hope that you too can become lesion free. Good Luck!

There's actually been lots of articles on this site. http://www.thebody.com/cria/forums/rectalhealth.html
http://www.thebody.com/cria/spring03/cancers.html#hpv

It's a huge issue for gay men who have receptive anal sex...but it's always been a big issue for women who have intercourse (hpv can lead to cervical cancer). It's just that HIV is the focus of all prevention efforts directed at gay men now and no one feels comfortable funding specific prevention information for men having receptive anal intercourse.

I too have HPV on top of my HIV. Let me tell you the laser treatment is a royal pain in the ass...pun intended. Get some ARD pads, maxipads. My doctor failed to tell me about he leaks which occur after the surgery for the first couple of months. I had the laser surgery and then two other treatments where they knocked me out to remove a couple of warts. It hurts like hell at first, but there is hope. I have been free from warts for almost 3 years but the itch never goes away. The key is go in once a year to get checked after they say your clear. Give yourself a monthly exam with finger and a mirror. If you have never had this problem it may sound strange...but trust me this is the best thing you can do!

Tetrasil (ww.tetrasil.com) from Marantech company is very very very very good product. I believe they are developing an HIV vaccine, or modifying one that exist so it is less toxic. You should check out their web site!
