I am absolutely terrified and I need some help on this. My neighbor is HIV+. He had a few scabs on his knuckles and was punching me in the shoulder just to joke around. When I noticed the scabs (not until an hour or so later), I went home and looked on my shirt. While he was punching me, one of his scabs must have ripped open and some blood got on my shirt. Now I am terrified that I might get HIV. Someone, anyone who has any extended knowledge on this disease, please respond to help me. There wasn't a lot of blood, just a slightly noticeable amount and I didn't have any open wounds on my shoulder, but I am still so afraid. Any response will be soooo helpful - THANK YOU!

Fear not my friend, you have absolutely nothing to worry about what so ever. Intact skin is THE best barrier you can have to HIV. You can not get HIV from any bodily fluid if it is with intact skin such as yours. Just chill out and don't worry. HIV is not as easy to catch as you think.

Blood on the skin is not the same as semen on the skin I would ask a doctor. Blood is very infectious.
Please ask a medical Doctor or Hiv specialist.

Anonymous, please get your facts straight and don't scare this guy. Here's link about blood on the skin from The Body's on Mr. Kull who is very knowledgable in this area. Get your facts straight before you post!!! Scaring people who are already scared to death is not good.
Here's the URL with Mr. Kull's response to blood on intact skin.

Sriker is totally correct, my friend. Fear not - from what you described, there is No WAY that you contracted HIV from your friend. Intact skin is an awesome barrier. And, even in a worst case scenario (if you would have had an open wound), with all of the air exposure involved, it would have been nearly impossible. Again, you simply didn't get HIV from that contact. However, if you need to ease your mind by seeing the facts .... get tested. But, in the meantime, be assured that you are fine. Hang in there!

The chance you got HIV in this situation is close to zero. The human skin is a great barrier to HIV, not to mention you were wearing a shirt. Other factors will play in effect of your true risk (if you had an open wound, which you didn't) such as his viral load, and the level of blood exposure. However, if the blood simply touched your shirt then your risk exposure is zero (HIV does not penetrate skin, nor does it last long in the environment). It literally would need to be placed directly in your blood stream or one of your mucuous membranes---and even in that event if his viral load was undetectable it still would not guarantee infection. I would not recommend testing in this situation. (Read up on HIV risk, and become educated...from what appears in this room no matter the amount of tests you/others take, many people still have high anxiety. The only way to calm your fears is to understand what you should/shouldn't be fearful of.)
I would be scared if I was the person who caused him to get the bloody knuckles in the first place, but not in the situation you describe.

The only thing you get from this incident is a dirty shirt, go and wash it and continue with your life...
