encounter
      #139881 - 04/11/05 10:20 AM

i had a high risk encounter with someone and i am so scared i have been driving myself crazy and can barely function. I was with a woman had protected sex, but was drunk and did not realize the condom had broke. I have no idea when it broke but i decided to get checked for stds. turns out i did contract herpes, yet i have no symptons from it, so am a little confused on this issue as well, but doctor said blood test was conclusive ( just not sure after spending days reading about that as well why wouldnt have any visible signs. it has been exactly 25 days since exposure. Do i have higher risk since i contracted herpes. are my chances any better or worse since the condom broke? i am experiencing so many diff symptons but not sure if self manifested or not, can sleep or eat, and driving myself crazy, feel like a shell of a person. The worst is the night sweats and the swollen glands. some please help me i am so scared

You sound really anxious, which is understandable but anxiety can make situations and symptoms feel 100 times worse then they really are. Since you did use a condom, then you were protected for at least part of the time. Generally, the odds of getting hiv from a one time condom break are pretty low(if this woman has hiv which you don't know for sure). The majority of the population has herpes so that isn't something you should be losing sleep over. Why don't you ask your doctor to do an hiv test at about the 6 week mark. This will be pretty accurate and will calm your anxiety some. Then do one at 12 weeks to put the gold stamp on it. Odds are you're fine so get tested and put it behind you.

I think you should go test with a pcr test

i am literally going to die right now and u have heightened my fears ten fold. i have seen posintgs on here where people have had unprotected anal sex, and no one has ever been so harsh... do u sincerely think i am doomed. does the condom not help at all... please i am litereally cramping up as i sit here and cannot focus on life anymore... i bought the home access test and am doing it tomorrow, but why so harsh?? are my circumstances that bad??

a 25 day elisa test via home access is not the way to know if you are poz
you need to wait out the window but a pcr test done before 28 days is a very good indicator

Whoa!! Relax.

First, most will agree that the responsible thing to do here is test. 28 day PCR is very reliable. 6 week Elisa is a very good indicator. It's a little too early to get a reliable result from your home access test (although even now, a negative result would be encouraging).

Now lets talk about your exposure. It is POSSIBLE that you contracted HIV but the odds are VERY VERY much against it. Even if you knew the sex worker was HIV+, your odds of contracting the virus as the insertive partner are very low (I have read numbers like 1 in 300 but not certain of the accuracy of that data). Multiply that by the odds the sex worker was HIV+ and your odds of being infected from this one instance are very slim, indeed.
