Can you make your lymph nodes swell from touching?
      #139117 - 03/22/05 09:37 PM

Does anyone know if you can make your lymph nodes swell by constantly checking them? I am very scared because I have swollen nodes behind my ears 6 weeks after a possible exposure. If anyone knows anything about this I would appreciate thier input.

Swollen nodes behind ears mean nothing in relation to HIV.

You can't say in relation to NOTHING. I've had hiv for 13 yrs, and have swollen nodes behind my ears...had them for years, but it never dawned on me why. when i went on medication and viral load went down...so did the nodes behind my ears. i just recently went off again after a baby, and guess what...they are back.

Yes, you can cause your nodes to swell by constantly feeling for them. I have done it myself needlessly worrying. Stop it and get tested!

how swollen is considered a swollen lymph node anyhow? I can feel them but I think they are sore because I've been poking them. Also it is only behind one ear, if it is hiv would it be behind both of them?

first of all, nodes sweling after possible exposure, would mean the other person is positive and he/she did transmit virus to you. if that is the case, the symptoms should occur within 2-4 weeks, and are generalised lymph nodes sweeling (neck, groin, armpits) and fever besides other flu-like symptoms.when they enlarge due to severe infection, they take a big volume and are tender. u will defitely feel them differently...get tested if you are too worried, and good luck

Lets just say that your lymph nodes are actually swollen without you touching them.

That still doesn't mean you have HIV. Remember, with HIV infection the swelling of your lymph nodes are generalized. Meaning, your lymph nodes should be swollen under your chins, armpits and groin. But it sounds like to me that your enlarged lymph node is localized (one area).

Not to mention many other reasons why your lymph nodes could swell, including a sore tooth!!!

That makes me believe that your lymph node is due to your anxiety and playing with it. I've experienced what you are going through. Trust me, stop touching it for a couple of weeks and it'll be gone. I've been there and done that! I'm negative and so are you!

Good luck!!
