Marc Hellerstein, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Hellerstein is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and Metabolism. He received his undergraduate degree from Brandeis University, his doctor of medicine from Yale University School of Medicine, and his doctorate in nutritional biochemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Department of Nutrition and Food Science. Dr. Hellerstein currently serves on several committees, including the Nutrition Subcommittee and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committees at San Francisco General Hospital. He is also a member of the Office of AIDS Research, National Institutes of Health, HIV/AIDS Planning Committee. He has been an invited speaker at many conferences and symposia on AIDS/HIV related issues, including: as conference organizer and chair of the Center for AIDS Research's Symposium "Wasting in HIV Infection," as working group leader at the Wasting Disorder Conference sponsored by the National Institutes of Health; at the American Society of Parenteral and Entreral Nutrition; at the AIDS Clinicians breakfast meeting on "Strategies for lean body mass accrual in HIV infection"; and at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine presentation on "Direct measurement of cell proliferation and androgens in HIV-associated weight loss." Dr. Hellerstein currently receives research funding from: National Institutes of Health; American Diabetes Association; University-wide AIDS Research Program; Abbott Laboratories; McNeil Pharmaceuticals; Supergen Inc.; Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG); College of National Resources; University of California at Berkeley; Nora Eccles Treadwell Foundation; and Agouron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Dr. Hellerstein is on the editorial board for Nutrition Reviews and the American Journal of Physiology (Endocrinology and Metabolism). He also is a reviewer for the Journal of Clinical Investigation, American Journal of Physiology, Nature Medicine, Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, Diabetes, AIDS, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Journal of Nutrition, to name just a few. |
