Active in AIDS research and treatment since tracking of the disease began in 1981, Dr. Sullivan serves as director of the Office of Research at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he is also a professor of pediatrics in the Program of Molecular Medicine.

A graduate of Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY, where he earned a B.S. in biology, Dr. Sullivan received a M.D. from the State University of New York Medical School/Upstate. He trained at the Children's Orthopedic Hospital (University of Washington), and at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). From 1975 to 1978, Dr. Sullivan served a residency in pediatrics at the University of Washington, where he was a senior fellow in arthritis and immunology. Dr. Sullivan has been with UMass Medical School since 1978.

Now a member of the Governor's Task Force on AIDS, Dr. Sullivan served on the Immunological Sciences Study Section from 1982 to 1986 and was a charter member of the AIDS and Related Research Study Section of the NIH. Since 1983, he has received more than $10 million for research in rapid diagnostic testing, and immunological responses to HIV. He was honored by Governor Dukakis in 1986 for his contribution to the fight against AIDS in children and adults with hemophilia, and received the University of Massachusetts Award for Distinguished Public Service.

Dr. Sullivan has long been sought as one of the foremost experts in pediatric AIDS and HIV treatment. He is currently serving on review panels for the Pediatric AIDS Foundation and Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, among others, and is collaborating on five research grants for the NIH. His professional affiliations are numerous and include the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Society of Clinical Investigation. Dr. Sullivan's co-authored articles have appeared in more than 100 peer-reviewed publications.
