Ewald Horwath, M.D., is Professor and Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Board certified in psychiatry and forensic medicine, Dr. Horwath is an expert in the pharmacological treatment of patients with AIDS, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety disorders, and bipolar disorder. His research centers on the psychiatric and neuropsychiatric aspects of HIV and AIDS, and the epidemiology of mood and anxiety disorders.

Dr. Horwath served from 1999 to 2006 as psychiatric consultant for the Highbridge-Woodycrest Center, a skilled nursing facility for persons with AIDS. In this role, he has managed the psychiatric care of numerous patients with mood, anxiety, cognitive and psychotic disorders comorbid with AIDS, substance abuse, opportunistic central nervous system (CNS) infections, CNS lymphoma, Herpes encephalopathy, and HIV-associated dementia.

In addition, Dr. Horwath is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a member of the American Academy of Psychiatry and Law and of the Leadership Council of the University of Miami Medical Group.

Dr. Horwath has authored or co-authored more than 50 articles and book chapters in the field of psychiatry. These articles have been published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Psychiatry and Archives of General Psychiatry. Dr. Horwath also serves as a peer reviewer for the American Journal of Psychiatry and Psychiatric Services.

Dr. Horwath earned his doctorate of medicine from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine and completed his internship at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ. He served his residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and was awarded a fellowship in the Psychiatric Epidemiology Training Program at Columbia University.
