Mission

AIDS Action is a national organization dedicated to the development, analysis, cultivation, and encouragement of sound policies and programs in response to the HIV epidemic. We do this through the dissemination of information and the building and use of advocacy on behalf of all those living with and affected by HIV. Our goal is simple. Until It's Over -- until no one acquires HIV, until those living with HIV have the care and services they need, and until a cure is found.

AIDS Action has been instrumental in the development and implementation of major public health policies to improve the quality of life for the estimated 850,000 - 900,000 Americans who are HIV positive. AIDS Action Council collaborates with the greater public health community to enhance HIV prevention programs and care and treatment services; and to secure comprehensive resources to address community needs until the epidemic is over.

History

In 1984 -- three years into the U.S. HIV epidemic -- elected officials on Capitol Hill were inactive and silent as the epidemic's impact grew from affecting gay men in New York and San Francisco to affecting every population and community in the United States. In response to the federal government's seeming indifference, groups of volunteers organized at the local level to educate their communities on HIV prevention, to care for those living with the virus, and to grieve for those lost to AIDS-defining conditions.

Yet the need remained for a national voice of authority, compassion, and reason to engage and motivate our elected officials and our country. With this in mind, a handful of the nation's first and largest community-based AIDS service organizations came together to create this voice, which they called AIDS Action.

Structure

Since its founding over twenty years ago, AIDS Action has addressed the needs of people who are at risk for and living with HIV infection and the organizations that serve them. AIDS Action has two arms with separate but complementary functions:

AIDS Action Foundation [501(c)(3)] develops and disseminates educational materials on the latest public policies and programs, the demographic impact of HIV, and medical research. AIDS Action Foundation Board.

AIDS Action Council [501(c)(4)] serves as a national voice for its members -- community-based organizations, local health departments and clinics, service providers, and health educators by advocating for effective legislative and social policies and programs for HIV prevention, treatment, and care.
